We'd all like some more people looking at our business. In business terms your website is your shop window, enticing people in is a small part of the battle, but if you're not getting anyone through the doors, then business via your website is going to be tough!
Here we present six strategies for getting people through the doors of your website.
1) Create a Facebook Page for your business. Most (I know not all) people have or have used Facebook, whether you like it or not it's here to stay. So instead of fighting the system, why not use it to your advantage? A Facebook page is an excellent way to communicate your products, services, news, testimonials or any other useful news on your business. If people find it news worthy enough, they'll pass it on to their friends, family and colleagues. Lots of blue chip companies are using Facebook in their marketing plans. It's free/cheap and is the perfect fit for lots of businesses.
2) Add a blog to your website. Just like the one your reading now! The fact your reading it means we've done something right to get you here, now you're here you may well look at our fantastic range of print, design and web services. See how a blog works now? It's a good way to give free information that will attract people to your website, and who may decide to stick around and see what else you do. Blogs can be free or very cheap to setup and there's lots of solution on the market such as Wordpress or Blogger, both of which are free.
3) Do some offline marketing. Flyers and leaflets are a great traditional way of getting exposure to your target audience. As long as you prominently display your website then you've got a good chance of hooking in some extra visitors. Even better if you've got a good offer why not tie it up to your website. A good example would be 'Visit our website at xxxx for an extra 10% off our widgets!' - then you'll get people flocking to get their discount code!
4) Get involved in social media. Say the word Twitter and most folk run a mile, thinking it's only Barack Obama and Stephen Fry who get involved. Actually Twitter can be a very good way of reaching out to your customers. There are various ways Twitter can be used to great effect. For instance when you make a blog post, send out a 'Tweet' to people and they'll see your web address and click through to your website to read it. Because Twitter is limited to just 140 characters it's great for syndicating your content out to others. If you're really lucky then your Twitter followers may deem your content worthy enough to 're-tweet' to their followers. Within a short time your message could be in front of 1000's of Twitter users.
5) Get on Linkedin. Think of Linkedin as Facebook for professionals. You'd be surprised at how many of your friends and colleagues are already establishing their businesses on Linkedin. It's free to join and just like Facebook you can maintain and build your contacts whilst getting involved in lots of groups that interest you. You can find jobs, answer questions in your field of expertise, request and pass testimonials and tell people what your business is doing.
6) Establish an email database and send email newsletters. Again, just like the one you may have seen from us that brought you here, email marketing can be a very effective tool to most businesses. A word of caution though, don't try to do the hard sell over email - it doesn't work. Instead give people something for free - your knowledge and expertise and you'll find people naturally enquiring on your product or service as they'll see you as an expert in your field. Mailchimp (the software we use here at Demon) is free for lists under 500 contacts - perfect for lots of small businesses.
So there you have six ways to boost traffic to your website, by no means an exhaustive list of ideas but a very useful list none the less.
