Do a search in Google for 'Kahrs Flooring Hertfordshire'. The top results should be Avalon Flooring, to save the you hassle click this link and it'll take you straight to the search results page.

Now click through to the website (don't worry, it's not a scam!). You'll notice that the page is very on-topic for the search you've just done i.e. kahrs wood flooring and hertfordshire.

This is not a coincidence. Google pays lots of attention to three key elements on a web page.

• The page title - the text in the very top left hand corner of the browser screen.
• The page heading - in this case just above the main copy on the page it says 'Wood Flooring in Hertfordshire'
• The page content - it clearly mentions the keywords of wood, flooring and hertfordshire.

There's no rocket science to this, just careful planning on what keywords are likely to attract the right customers to the website. Use the Google Keyword Tool and this will help you decide which key phrases are worth targeting as they give you clear statistics on how many searches are done for a particular keyword or phrase.

Now look at YOUR own website

You can apply this method to your own business and website. Sell flowers? Then create a page called 'Florists in Hertfordshire'. Write a page of copy - say about three or four paragraphs on florists and the service you offer, mention the keywords of florists and hertfordshire in the copy and hey presto! You'll start appearing in Google for the search term 'Florists in Hertfordshire'.

Depending on the competition and your industry it may take a little more work, but unless you start today you'll never reach the top of Google.
